The Ondo State Youth Network (OSYN) vehemently disassociates itself from the recent actions and statements made by the Ondo State Government, particularly Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, and his appeal to shun protests. We find these actions to be insensitive and uncoordinated, failing to address the genuine concerns of the youth in our state.
For almost a decade, OSYN has diligently protected and advocated for the interests of the youth in Ondo State. We consider ourselves critical stakeholders in matters as sensitive as this, and we are appalled by the disregard shown by the government towards our organization and the broader youth community.
The recent statements by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, and the Senior Special Assistant on Community Engagement (Central), Mr. Femi Fadairo, highlight the administration’s insensitivity. Their claims of prioritizing youth welfare are baseless and unsupported by their actions. The youth of this state have not been properly treated by this current administration.
OSYN Coordinator, Afe Ezekiel, has stated, “While OSYN recognizes the youth present at the meetings, they do not represent our network. Our organization, duly registered with state authorities, has its own leadership and structure within the local government framework. We will hold an emergency meeting to discuss our next steps. We may mobilize our members across the 18 local government areas to join the nationwide protest against bad governance, ensuring our voices are heard.”
The Ondo State Youth Network has always been non-partisan and will remain so. However, our status as a significant stakeholder in the state must be acknowledged and respected. The government’s current approach undermines our efforts and disregards the legitimate grievances of the youth.
We criticize the lack of proper engagement and the dismissive attitude of the government. The recent dialogue sessions were nothing more than a charade, failing to address the root causes of our frustrations. The youth of Ondo State deserve better, and we will not be silenced by empty promises and superficial engagements.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s call for patience and his dismissal of protests as unnecessary show a clear disconnect from the realities faced by the youth. We need concrete actions and genuine commitment to addressing our concerns, not mere rhetoric. The reference to the EndSARS protests is a poor attempt to dissuade legitimate expressions of discontent and should not be used to stifle our democratic rights.
We urge the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with legitimate youth representatives and take immediate steps to address the pressing issues affecting our community. The welfare of the youth cannot be compromised, and we will continue to hold the government accountable for its actions.
The Ondo State Youth Network stands united and resolute in our mission to advocate for the rights and interests of the youth. We will not back down until our voices are heard and our demands are met. We call on all youth in the state to remain vigilant and prepared to stand up for our rights.
Signed,
